Last week we had the School Entrance Ceremony, 入学式, which was remarkably similar to the Graduation Ceremony a few weeks ago. The freshmen processed in by class, and their home room teacher guided them with a flourish. Songs were sung, speeches were made, and each student’s name was individually called. The gym was decorated with red and white bunting and huge flower arrangements, and all of the mums were there in their finest. (My favorites are the ones who pair their chic skit suits with fuzzy bunny slippers!) Even a few of the dads must have taken off work for the occasion, and sat proudly in the audience.

My school has the tradition of quickly dismantling the enormous flower arrangements and allowing the teachers (and even a few students!) to gather personal bunches to take home. I helped with the disassembly, and while we were working, the new Vice Principal walked by. I bravely ventured, in my wobbly Japanese, “The flowers smell nice, don’t they?”
“Very nice!” He responded.
“They’re pretty!” I said, like a proud 3 year old.
“先生もきれいです.” He responded with a grandfatherly twinkle. “Teacher is pretty too,” he had said.
I was a bit nervous when I heard we were getting a new Vice Principle, but maybe it will be ok after all ♥

Was your entrance ceremony on a friday? It seemed like a lot of my co-workers with kids took the morning/day off on friday…seems so weird to start at the end of the week! 🙂
It was indeed on a Friday! It kind of eases everyone into things, I guess…we didn’t have classes until Tuesday/Wednesday, even! The timing at the beginning is so weird!
Sounds like a nice guy. I get anxious about new coworkers, but most of the time I’ve “gotten”good people.
Yeah, I was pretty nervous, but so far they seem cool–I’m relieved!
