A few weeks ago I talked about the K-On! Christmas cake, and mentioned there was another cake that looked even cooler. I planned to order one for Sean, but missed the cutoff date and kicked myself for days.
Then, on Christmas Eve, I dropped into Lawson to pick up a couple last minute things, and the Christmas cakes caught my eye. Most of them were the normal whipped cream & strawberry concoctions, but the one on the end stood out simply because of the price tag–4500 yen. 4500 yen for a conbini Christmas cake? The hell?
And then I bought it.
Neon Genesis Evangelion Christmas Cake.
For those unfamiliar, Neon Genesis Evangelion is an apocolyptic mecha action series. The very basics of it is robots fighting, with lots of complicated psychological/philosophical stuff going on. Very twisty business. So let’s Christmas!

A strong strawberry scent hit me as soon as I opened it. Sean thinks it looks like LCL, particularly from a rather memorable scene in the series. I won’t spoil it for anyone that hasn’t seen it yet, but Evangelion fans, what do you think?

Some of the religious undertones in Evangelion make a Christmas cake all the more amusing to me. What’s inside here?
This is a figure of Asuka, one of the main characters of the series, with one of the weapons of the series, a Prog Knife!
Now I know why the cake cost so much! This thing has quite a heft to it, and is very solid. About as sharp as a letter opener, but it’ll cut the cake just fine.
And the cake itself? Strawberry glaze, a thick strawberry cream, whole fruits, and a sponge cake layer. It was actually quite delicious!
The real joy of this was the look on Sean’s face when I brought the cake home. It might have been a bit pricey, but it was totally worth it to make him so happy. I had given up hope of snagging one, but I’m really glad I was able to get this Christmas surprise!
So, Evangelion fans, what do you think? Worth the price? And would you want a Prog Knife of your very own?

Hmm, love Eva but think the cake is a bit simple for 4500 yen.
I would have like a cake decorated with little models of the characters doing Christmasy things.
Like the previous commenter says, the cake itself is a bit simple; but I love the concept. The very idea of getting a NERV cake, and it coming with the knife, is pretty cool.
If you are an Evangelion fan, it is worth it. If you are not an Evangelion fan, it is not worth it.
the cake looks like the core to me (power source for the angels apostles or whatever…).. just cuz it’s so red, but then im thinking the last few eps; and it could be lcl… though why asuka as the figure then?? it needs the rei-lilith as a marzipan topping or something…
Asuka just matches red better, I think.
