Kyary Pamyu Pamyu’s newest album Pika Pika Fantajin finally came out last week! While the music videos for Dreams Beginning Ring Ring, Family Party and Kira Kira Killer have all been released, there’s a few songs on the album that have yet to have music videos. Serious Hitomi is one of those, but I decided to go ahead and translate the lyrics.

The main meaning of this song rests on a pun, or Oyaji Gag. The title is Serious Hitomi, and in the song she sings repeatedly about Hitomi Serious. 人見知り, or hitomishiri, essentially means “shy” in Japanese.

The song is basically about a shy girl, though like Kira Kira Killer, it doesn’t have ton of deep meaning. One of my coworkers helped check my translation, and it’s always a trip explaining some of the weirder Japanese slang to this middle-aged Japanese man. He’s a great sport!

I think the sound of this one is really interesting–it’s a lot harder than her usual candy pop, opening with some heavy electric guitars and some punkish to almost metal influences. Perhaps Baby Metal is having an effect? There’s also a heavy helping of The Bangles in the mix–this almost sounds like the Japanese grandniece of Walk Like an Egyptian.
