Today’s Watercolor and a Japanese Graduation Tradition

Monday was the day for High School graduation ceremonies here in Japan. It’s usually the first of March, but since it fell on a Saturday this year, it was moved to the next soonest weekday. I’ve gotten used to graduation in Japan being in March, but it’s still odd to me to have classes the next day with first and second years. There’s still a couple weeks left until spring break and the end of the school year, but the third years are finished!

I made this little painting for the graduating class and put it out with the telegrams. This is a fun tradition that I haven’t seen elsewhere. People that can’t attend the ceremony send formal telegrams, often put into elaborate cases and displayed in a place of honor. Because the teachers in Japanese schools are transferred every few years, and high school ceremonies are generally held on the same day, so there are many teachers that are only able to go to their current school, though they might have spent the first years of the students high school careers at a different school. I was able to attend the ceremony, but I still thought it would be a fun gesture 🙂

Congrats, graduates!

Gunma-chan x Sento-kun, plus a contest!

gunma-sento-kunA little while back I had the idea of dressing Gunma-chan in various outfits, especially those of other local mascots or Yurukyara. This is Gunma-chan wearing the outfit of everyone’s favorite slightly creepy mascot from Nara, Sento-kun. What do you think? And  check it out, an animated .gif! It’s a  simple one, but I’m happy with it 🙂 Should I do more?

Everyone around here knows how much I love Gunma-chan (seriously, do a google search and see how many links to my blog you’ll find.) A friend of mine passed along this announcement for a Gunma-chan outfit design contest! The idea is to make a cute outfit for promoting Gunma. My favorite version is of course superhero Gunma-chan, but I don’t think that’s the best for people who don’t really know Gunma.

I need your help, people! What costume should I put our little horsey mascot in? What should he wear? I can’t decide, but if you have any ideas please let me know!

Today’s watercolor: Sumo!

After my Daruma painting recently I felt like doing a few Japanese related watercolors. The sumo tournament was on recently, and I always enjoy catching a few matches on TV. I even went to the tournament in person a few years ago and had a blast!

Next week I’ll post a special graduation themed painting, and I might even have a special Kyary Pamyu Pamyu painting in celebration of the ridiculous views my translation of Yume No Hajima Ring Ring is getting! And as always, I’m always happy to take suggestions–what do you think I should paint next? 🙂

Cherry Blossom Starbucks!

It’s here! The Sakura Frappuccino & Latte arrived in Japan on Saturday, the same day as a huge snowstorm that dumped tons of snow across the country. We’ve been snowed in for a few days, but the roads are a bit clearer today. It meant that I could finally make it out to try this beautiful spring drink on a snowy February day! Of course, the Sakura are still Continue reading

Today’s Watercolor: Hearts!

This week is one of my favorite holidays, so in honor of Valentine’s Day I have not one but two watercolors planned! The first one is under the cut, and the next one will be up later this week. I’m also planning on baking up a storm for my coworkers, partially because Continue reading
