Starbucks Pretzel Mocha

photo (15)Starbucks Japan has been on an interesting kick this year. They seem determined to put solid starchy chunks in every specialty drink that comes out. This is reminiscent of the pink chocolate flakes on the Sakura Frappuccino, which will  come out after the Valentine’s Pretzel Mocha finishes this Friday.

The Tiramisu Frappuccino had cakey bits, the Strawberry Cheesecake Frappuccino had solid bits of crust. The pieces are always small enough to flow through a straw easily, but they’ve had varying levels of success in terms of appeal. From taste to mouth feel, they’ve gotten it very right this year (Crushed Almond Latte) to rather wrong (Crushed Marron Pie). They’ve really outdone themselves with the most recent addition to the line, the Chocolate Pretzel Mocha.

If you’ve ever wanted whole shards of salted snack food in your coffee, this is Continue reading

Sakura Latte, coming soon…!

photo (17)Dropped by Starbucks yesterday and saw this sign. As soon as the Valentine’s Pretzel Mocha, which I’ll be blogging about later this week, is done the Sakura Latte (and the Sakura Frappucino) will hit. Are you as excited as I am?

Today’s watercolor: another super silly Pokemon!

20140207-085656.jpg

I did a watercolor of Farfetch’d dressed as Darkwing Duck a few months ago, and did this one around the same time but never posted it. These Pokemon crossovers crack me up–what other crossover should I do?

Today’s Watercolor: Cherry Blossoms and Maple Syrup

cherry blossoms maple syrup scan

I’m pleased to present a project that I’ve been working on for a few weeks! This is the header for my friend’s blog, Cherry Blossoms and Maple Syrup. It’s a book review blog (hence the books) with one of the writers based in Japan and the other based in Canada (hence the maple syrup.) You’ve already seen the Cherry Blossom tree that I posted last week. I’m so excited to see the project completed and my art up!

Mountain Dew Corn Snacks!

So, this is a thing. Here’s some thoughts we had while trying them:

  • It’s like super sugary breakfast cereal that’s punching you in the tongue.

Today’s Watercolor: Cherry Blossoms

cherry blossoms watercolor

It’s not quite cherry blossom season yet, but my old blog post for the Sakura Frappuccino has been getting crazy attention recently. Today was so warm that it was easy to dream of cherry blossoms, so I thought I’d post this little painting of cherry blossoms I painted for a friend. This is actually only half of the finished piece, so hopefully I’ll be able to reveal the rest of the painting soon!

Old Tokyo in Color

blum geisha

Traditional Japanese art tends to be highly stylized, so it’s wonderful to see an historical yet realistic representation in the art of Cincinnati born artist Robert Frederick Blum. He lived in Continue reading

Today’s watercolor: Kusatsu Onsen Mascot Yumomi-chan

yumomi kusatsuWe went to Kusatsu Onsen last weekend, so I decided to do a little painting of the local mascot Yumomi-chan. The water in Kusatsu is super hot, so it’s traditionally cooled by women with large wooden planks. You can read a nice write up and even check out a video of one of their performances over at JapanNewbie.

This is my second Gunma-tastic painting in a row, previous being the Daruma of course, and the next one will be even more so. What do you think it will be?

Today’s Watercolor: Daruma

darumaThe Maebashi Daruma Festival was last week! We had lots of fun as always 🙂 This picture  doesn’t quite capture my new sparkly gold paint, but I really like how it looks in person!

On the last day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…

penguins

Christmas penguins! It’s the end of winter break, and the first chance I had to pick up my brushes in about two weeks. I actually started this one before the holiday vaguely based on this article on Slate and the amusing kerfuffle that followed. But really, who doesn’t love penguins?
