Happy Barthday! Wait, what?

Happy Friday–it’s time for the Engrish of the week, hurray!

So, yesterday was our friend Brooke’s birthday (Happy Birthday, Brooke!) which meant that there was cake during our meeting this afternoon (Happy cake day, Alice!)

How adorable is this? Happy Barthday? Awww…it was pretty tasty too. Lovely rich banana cake from the same restaurant that does the big Expat Thanksgiving every year down at the Prefectural Office. Yay, cake! Every meeting should have cake, for sure.

In other news, still working on getting the pictures sorted from our super happy awesome trip to LA. We had a fabulous time, and really appreciated the opportunity to go and connect with so many awesome people (and so many delicious enchiladas, which I connected with my face.) If anyone has any pictures, we’d love to see them! You can email us at shaftsa at gmail dot com or post them in our Facebook group πŸ™‚

ALSO, we are now accepting submissions for the Engrish of the week! Did you spot some awesome Engrish in the wild? Want to be featured on Super Happy Awesome? We’d love to have you! Just email your photo to shaftsa at gmail dot com and we’ll be sure to credit you/link back, etc. Yay!

Happy Tanabata!

Today is Tanabata here in Japan! It is also known as the Star Festival, 七倕 or simply 7/7, and is the holiday of star-crossed lovers. It’s a bit romantic and fun, with lots of great decorations.

When we did holiday presentations in class a few months ago, many of the girls chose to tell me about Orihime and Hikoboshi, represented by the stars Altair and Vega in the heavens. They are separated by the Milky Way and able to meet only once a year, on July 7th–but only if it doesn’t rain!

A bit blurry, but you can just about make out the shoulders showing!Sadly, it was a bit cloudy and rainy, but I went down to our city’s Tanabata Festival to check it out with some friends. Things were a bit quiet but the decorations were lovely–all of downtown is decked out with streamers and stars! There were also lots of girls out in pretty yukata, the traditional summer kimono. Some even wore their yukata around their shoulders–scandalous!

The Tanabata Tree at the ANA counter at LAX!

The traditional way to celebrate is to write a wish on a slip of paper and hang it from the bamboo tree.Β  Even the ANA counter at LAX had one set up for you to hang your wish on as I was leaving Los Angeles on Tuesday. Most of the wishes were for a safe flight, unsurprisingly!

It’s a bit of a romantic holiday, so people often wish for luck in love, but other subjects are fair game as well. What’s your Tanabata wish?

California Dreamin’

We’ve landed! We’re safe and sound in LA and everything went smoothly. The girl at the ANA counter did get a look of polite Japanese terror when we rolled up the enormous Daruma boxes. It probably didn’t help that I mixed up my vocabulary, and when she asked what was inside I told her it was γŠγ°γ‘ instead of γŠγ‚‚γ‘γ‚ƒ–I meant to say that they were toys, but instead informed her that we had boxes full of ghosts. Whoops!

Of course by this point there were about 10 ANA staff members floating around with worried looks on their faces, but as soon as they lifted the boxes it was all good. The boxes are huge but weigh about 9 kg, so they’re really light! There are also pictures of Daruma printed on the boxes, which helped too. They were all pretty amused to see the giant Daruma getting shipped off to America!

But now we’re here, safe and sound, all checked into the lovely Westin Bonaventure. The Daruma are pretty sleepy after their journey…

Darn bed hogs…

Remember, tomorrow morning is our panel–10:45 AM in LP4 (LACC411). We brought a TON of stuff to giveaway, so I really hope people come! And even if you can’t make it, you can still enter the giveaway here on the blog as well!

Our trip to the Daruma Factory!

Yesterday we did something that was easily one of the coolest things we’ve ever done in Japan. We had a Super Awesome Secret Mission for Anime Expo–we went to the Daruma Factory to get special custom Daruma for this year’s event! They’ve posted the video on YouTube now, so here are a few pictures, and that YouTube surprise I mentioned yesterday πŸ™‚

You may be familiar with Daruma, the traditional Japanese toy/good luck charm which is usually bought at the start of the New Year, or the beginning of a new project. You might not know that Daruma are actually from our area, with over 80% of Darumas made in Japan coming from Gunma every year. There’s even a Continue reading

Rose-flavored Ice Cream?

One of the best parts of our recent trip to our city’s Rose Garden was the specialΒ  バラ or rose-flavored ice cream! Our friends’ reactions were mixed–some people thought it was too perfumey, others thought the rose flavor wasn’t strong enough.Β  I thought it was just right!

As I’m sure you know, Japan loves to do special and regional flavors, and the Soft Cream options are endless. I’ve also had Green Tea, Miso, Pineapple, Brown Sugar, and my favorite–Wasabi-flavored ice cream!

What’s the most unusual soft cream flavor you’ve had?

Heart Shaped Watermelon!

Recently we stopped in at a very fancy fruit store in Tokyo Midtown, in a very fancy part of Roppongi (also the location Tokyo’s Ritz-Carlton, to give you some idea.) There were lots of hilariously overpriced fruits, but this one in particular caught our eye. In fact, it was so expensive that there was no price tag. You know what that means–if you have to ask, you probably can’t afford it!

After snooping around on the internet it looks like you can pick one up for a couple hundred bucks, and the nicer specimens are over Β₯50,000 (upwards of $600 US, depending on exchange rates.)

It’s really cute, and perhaps the perfect way to splash out and declare your love in the summer time, but it’s way too expensive for my tastes! This is the kind of thing that I would happily eat, but not so happily pay for. It’s also the kind of thing that has no place in my life, but I’m still glad it exists, for some reason. What do you think?

A Very Merry Unbirthday, A Nice Moment in Japan

I was sitting in the teacher’s room after lunch, when the volleyball coach announced that I had a guest. It seemed a bit odd–I don’t often receive visitors, as the old ladies say, especially at school. At first I thought that I must have left something important at home and Sean was delivering it, but then I realized that it was actually one of my favorite students waiting in the hall.

I was quite happy to see her, a third-year girl who I’ll call Yui.

“Happy Birthday!” she said as soon as I came out.

“What? Today isn’t my birthday…”

Her face crumpled, and I noticed the little cheesecake she had in her hand.

I knew immediately what had happened–in my classes, I often play a game called Criss Cross. Everyone stands up, and I ask questions based on the recent material. If the students answer correctly, they can sit down, and they can also let their friends sit down by declaring “Front,” “Back,” “Left,” or “Right.”

The ones left standing at the end have to sing a song as their punishment, which provides excellent motivation to answer the questions. I always force them to sing “Happy Birthday, Miss Alice!” and tell them that it’s because “every day is my birthday!” That usually gets good laughs (and a few cheeky students trying to ask how old I am!)

My first period class that day however had been a bit rocky–it wasΒ excruciatinglyΒ hot, and the students flopped about like dead fish (and about as smelly.) Worse, the windows were open to try to catch a breeze, but the noise of the traffic was loud and distracting, with constant trucks going by.

Yui swore up and down that no one had told her, but I’m quite sure that a sleepy first year had meant well and dutifully informed her Sempai that it was my birthday. I’m also quite sure that said first year probably got quite a pounding shortly there after, because Yui looked absolutely mortified!

To change the subject, I asked her when her birthday was–turns out it was June 10th! Oh no! Perhaps it was all an elaborate ruse to clue me in about her recent birthday, because I did make her promise to come back on Monday so I could give her a little something. Wouldn’t that be clever!

My coworkers had noticed the conversation, and were wondering about the cakey that I brought back in. When I explained it to one teacher she had the best response: “That’s…what’s the word? Awful? No…adorable!” Poor Yui!

Happy Friday! Engrish of the week!

It’s Friday, Friday, Friday…sorry, can’t get that song out of my head since we’ve been doing it in class this past week. It may be the worst song ever, but the kids can sing along and it’s pretty hilarious. Also, should I find it disturbing that they seem to find it hilarious whenever a non-white person appears on screen? I’ve been using the Glee version, and even Mercedes is entertaining for all of 2 seconds. It’s kind of awkward.

Anyway, this is perhaps the most honest hair salon I’ve ever seen. You should get your hair cut here, if you want to be…Pretentious.
