Studying Japanese & The End of Smart.fm

The ALMOST perfect month!

When I first got to Japan, I was looking for convenient, inexpensive ways to study Japanese. A friend of mine mentioned Smart.fm, and after checking it out, I was hooked. The interface really worked for me, and the Spaced Repetition System seemed like a great learning method. I enjoyed being able to Continue reading

ハニトスト! Honey Toast!

You know it’s a good weekend when there’s Karaoke, and last weekend involved not one but TWO trips to Pasela. Pasela seems to be all the rage in Tokyo right now, and they have a huge selection of songs, with entire books devoted both to Foreign songs and Anime Songs and some 300,000 Japanese songs to boot.

But the real draw, for me, is the Continue reading

Ueno is Panda Crazy!

When we went to Tokyo last weekend, the trains were still a bit disrupted, so instead of landing in Shinjuku or Ikebukuro as usual, our final stop was Ueno. This was a happy occasion, because we haven’t gotten much chance to go to Ueno recently, and it holds a Continue reading

Engrish of the Week: Like a virgin?

Shiseido’s Maquillage makeup line’s tagline is “I’m Virgin” because everyone loves a vir…wait, what? These words, they do not mean what I think you think they mean, Shiseido!

I guess they’re trying to imply that she’s young and her skin is fresh and um, untouched, but…yeah, I don’t even. File this one under “slightly creepy”! The commercial is even creepier, does anyone have a link to it online?

What are your plans this weekend? We’re hoping to take a nice bike ride by the river, and hopefully enjoy some sunshine. Spring is so close, I can almost taste it!

Alice’s Adventures in Harajuku: Walk, Walk, Fashion Baby

So as I mentioned, we spent this past weekend in Tokyo. Even though Tokyo Anime Fair was canceled, some of our friends still made the trip, and there was a lot going on. There was epic Karaoke, wandering around Akihabara and Ueno, meeting up with some of our friends from the Anime Industry, and lots of fun!

On Sunday, Sean had to get some work done, so while he settled in at a Manga Café I headed over to one of my favorite neighborhoods—Harajuku. Harajuku is one of my absolute favorite places in the world, and one of my favorite things to do is walk around on a Sunday afternoon. This is also the favorite activity of everyone else ever, it would seem, judging by the crowds!

I was in a mood for creativity, so I figured I would Continue reading

Tokyo is not deserted!

Hey guys! Here’s a shot from the Yamanote Line on Sunday afternoon around 5, passing through Harajuku. Tokyo seems to be mostly back to normal, though there are a few Continue reading

Happy Friday!

Happy Friday! Caught  this one in Ueno Station today in Tokyo. It’s not misspelled or grammatically incorrect, just oddly poetic–my favorite!

We’re spending the weekend in Tokyo to see some friends and meet with some contacts in the Animation Industry, some of whom had originally planned to be here for Tokyo Anime Fair this weekend, but decided to go ahead with their trips anyway despite the cancellation.

We also had a birthday party tonight for a dear friend that involved delicious food, Karaoke in several languages, and lots of fun! A pretty great weekend so far, and it’s only Friday! What are your plans for the weekend?

Faces of Japan: Strange Kinoko Dance Company

One of my guilty pleasures is Japanese TV. We don’t watch every day, but sometimes we catch certain shows, and sometimes we just keep it on for background noise. I like to think that it’s helping my Continue reading

Blog for Japan: Japan Based Organizations for Aid

A number of people have asked recently how they can help, and what they can do. It can be frustrating to be so close and yet so far from a crisis, and believe me–a large part of me wants to grab a Continue reading

Radiation and Us, as explained by XKCD & Genpatsu-Kun

So, the bad news is that radiation levels were slightly (SLIGHTLY) higher in Gunma today than they have been in the past few days. The good news is that Continue reading
