Engrish of the Week! Cooking hair?

Do you know the scent of burning hair? I can only imagine it wafting out of this place that Sean found in Tokyo recently. Ewww…

Also, bonus points for the creepy dotted children’s faces on the window. It’s sort of like a really lame Magic Eye Picture. I hope it’s not their hair being cooked!

Whether you’re celebrating Día de los Muertos, All Saints’ Day, or still enjoying the fresh memories of Halloween, this print seemed quite appropriate for the season! What do you think?

Engrish of the Week: Jewnail?

Spotted this one while picking up my Halloween costume! It’s in my favorite color, too–Lame Silver!

There’s tons of stuff going on in Tokyo for Halloween. We might try to catch some of it, as we’re in town for TIMM/ TIFFCOM/ TAF Autumn,  etc.

What are your plans for this lovely holiday weekend? Happy Halloween!

All aboard the Gun Bus!

Well, it wouldn’t be a trip in Gunma if you didn’t ride the Gun Bus!

Fabulous gun/kancho demonstration courtesy of our lovely guest stars, Chelsey, who can be found over at Fish in Man Bum and Liz, who may or may not have a blog. Thanks, ladies!

Meet the Mascots! Joushu-kun & Miyama-chan

Gunma-chan wears many hats here, but one of the jobs he doesn’t do is police work. Perhaps he dreams of being a police man when he grows up, but for now, his horsey cousins have taken the reins (ba-dum-ching!)

Meet Joushu-kun & Miyama-chan, Gunma’s police Continue reading

10,000 Free Flights to Japan!?

Unsurprisingly, foreign tourism in Japan has plummeted in the past seven months, following the catastrophic events that ravaged the Tohoku region last March. Numbers were down more than 50% in the months directly following the disasters, as much as 80% in some prefectures. They are still generally hovering between 30 and 40% less than what they were a year ago.

Pikachu wants to take you to Japan!

Surprisingly, the Japanese Government announced yesterday a drastic plan to turn the situation around. Apparently in the next fiscal year, they will be distributing 10,000 free round-trip plane tickets to Japan. Ten thousand FREE tickets.

This sounds almost too good Continue reading

Ah, October. Leaves changing color, nights getting cooler, days getting shorter. It’s a beautiful season, full of tradition.

Sadly, a new tradition has recently entered my annual calendar Continue reading

The Many Faces of Gunma-chan: Super ぐんまちゃん!

Hey guys! How awesome is this Gunma-chan? I think he’s my new favorite!

Now he’s not just our prefectural mascot, he’s our prefectural super hero too! I know I feel safer having him protecting us. Don’t you?

The cabbage patch we call home is pretty safe, but I’m sure he must be pretty busy fighting…well…what kind of villain would he fight? And would he drive a cabbage-mobile? Oh, Super Gunma-chan,we love you!

Happy Engrish Friday!

My students often write that their favorite food is, and I quote, “an omelete containing fried rice.”

I’m not the biggest fan of this supposedly Western dish, myself–the rice is fried in ketchup, and the eggs of the omelet are very…Japanese. If you’ve ever had Japanese scrambled eggs, you know what I mean.

I don’t know if the dish is love, but please relish it once by all means.
