A very Kyary Xmas!

A very Kyary Xmas!

Recently, on a particularly good hair day, one of my students declared that I had “Christmas Hair.” I don’t think this is quite what he meant, but I love it!

Neon Genesis Evangelion Christmas Cake

A few weeks ago I talked about the K-On! Christmas cake, and mentioned there was another cake that looked even cooler. I planned to order one for Sean, but missed the cutoff date and kicked myself for days.

Then, on Christmas Eve, I dropped into Lawson to pick up a couple last minute things, and the Christmas cakes caught my eye. Most of them were the normal whipped cream & strawberry concoctions, but the one on the end stood out simply because of the price tag–4500 yen. 4500 yen for a conbini Christmas cake? The hell?

And then I bought it.

Neon Genesis Evangelion Christmas Cake.

New Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, “Tsukema tsukeru” with lyrics!

Everyone’s favorite Harajuku girl is at it again! きゃりーぱみゅぱみゅ, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu (star of my most popular posts ever) has released a new PV for her new single, which is due out January 11th.

Produced by Nakata Yasutaka of capsule and Perfume, among others, this new tune is pretty catchy and just about as nonsensical (both verbally and visually) as Kyary’s summer smash Pon Pon Pon.

The song (lyrics below) is all about putting on false eyelashes, and how they make the singer feel cute and confident. The video also features extensive eyelashes, as well as some pretty nutty other sights.

Apparently Kyary actually has a line of false eyelashes for sale, though I haven’t seen them at my local shops. Does that make this extremely meta, or extremely commercial? Perhaps both?

What do you think, is it as good as Pon Pon Pon? Is the song as catchy, the video as crazy? The production quality has skyrocketed since the last music video, but is the creative content up to snuff? I will say, I’m loving all the gifs showing up on tumblr. Hilarious!

Lyrics below the cut…

Engrish of the Week: TIME SPARK & The JLPT

PLEASANT LIFE TOR YOU!

Recently pictures of totally awesome 100¥ watches started showing up on Facebook. Why would anyone want such a super cool watch, when most people tend to just use their cellphones to keep time these days? For the JLPT!

Those of you who have taken the Japanese Language Proficiency Test know that not only are you not allowed to Continue reading

Lawson’s K-On! Fair

If you’re dreaming of coming to a magical land where there’s anime at every turn, and the girls have big beautiful eyes sparkling up at you, most people would tell you that Japan isn’t really like that. But here’s a little secret–sometimes it is.

For example, as far as anime at every turn, character goods are actually fairly prevalent. 7-Eleven is full of everyone’s favorite pirates from One Piece, and Lawson tends to carry products from the popular High School Girl/Rock Band series K-On!, among others. The feature length movie hits theaters on December 3rd, so what better than a little promotion?

And while these big beautiful eyes are staring up at you, there’s no need to give the girl a kiss. Though you may want to give her a nibble instead…

I find it odd that almost every single girl is shown with her mouth open, or putting something into it. Why?

Hello Kitty celebrates 七五三

November 15th is one of my favorite holidays in Japan. It’s not a public holiday, so we still have to go to work tomorrow, but it’s a cultural holiday like Setsubun and Hinamatsuri. 七五三 or Shichi-Go-San means 7-5-3, and is one of the days celebrating children in Japan.

The holiday falls on a Tuesday this year, so the past few weekends have seen families with small children heading to their local shrines in droves. Beautiful kimono, hakama, and sometimes even Western finery is rented (or purchased) and many families also take it as an excuse for formal portraits.

The day commemorates the passage into “middle childhood” and many people take their 7 or 3 year-old daughters and their 5 year-old sons to the shrines for blessing. The shrines are full of kids right now, and kid friendly signs have popped up as well.

I spotted these lovely Hello Kitty ema votive boards at the local Hachiman Shrine in nearby Tamamura town. Kitty-chan and Dear Daniel are celebrating 七五三 in style!

Have you ever celebrated Shichi-Go-San? Or seen the kiddies dressed up for it? And speaking of Hello Kitty, according to Twitter, she may in fact bleed Pepsi Pink. Oh, Pepsi Pink!

Happy Pocky Day!

We interrupt your regularly schedule Engrish of the week to bring you important news: the clever marketing people at Glico have realized that 11/11 rather looks like four sticks of everyone’s favorite Japanese treat, Pocky, standing next to each other.

Better yet, as this is the year 2011, that makes today 11/11/11 and is in fact the ultimate Pocky day. Especially at 11:11 in the morning! Or evening! Don’t you want Pocky yet?

Please celebrate by watching this hilarious collection of ridiculous commercials featuring my favorite ARASHI boy Nino grooving to MC Hammer. I particularly enjoy the fact that “Hammertime” has morphed into “食べたい” or tabetai, which means “I want to eat!” Very clever!

Will you eat Pocky today? What’s your favorite flavor? I haven’t had any for a little while, but maybe I’ll pick up a box to celebrate!

Pepsi PINK!

Yes! It’s here! The day has finally arrived for the new Winter Pepsi flavor! We’ve been waiting for this one for a while–how could you not be excited for Strawberry Milk flavored cola?

Pepsi Japan has a long line of insane seasonal flavors–this past summer’s Caribbean Gold Pepsi and last winter’s Mont Blanc Pepsi are just two recent offerings. So tasty, and yet so ridiculous! A clever marketing ploy on the part of Suntory, the flavors are usually more for the novelty than anything else–and it certainly does get people talking (myself included, obviously.)

Now, Strawberry Milk may seem Continue reading

Gunma-chan, A Call To Arms!

We’re big fans of Gunma-chan around here, our Prefecture’s horsey little mascot. He’s a pretty cute pony, and may in fact be cuter than any other mascot in Japan. In fact, there is a huge Japan-wide competition right now to decide this very fact, and Gunma-chan needs your help!

All you have to do is send an email to req@yurugp.jp with the subject line “243” (no quotation marks.)  That’s it! You can do it once a day up until November 26th, when the Japan’s ultimate mascot will be determined. DO IT.

Gunma-chan has advanced from Continue reading
