The reboot of the Sailor Moon anime is coming out this Saturday! I’m so excited to see what they’ve done with this classic series, and hope that it lives up to the rose-colored nostalgia that is the original.

I have fond memories of watching Sailor Moon after school every day when I lived in Austria, and I know that many people around my age do as well.

One of the great things about the new series starting up is the influx of related goods hitting stores, including this cellphone case. As soon as I saw it, I knew I had to get it! It’s been getting a lot of comments, though amusingly people don’t always know what it’s a reference to. I guess it sticks out as a design?

Are you looking forward to the show? Here’s a sneak peek at the transformation sequence if you want to check it out!

Today’s watercolor: Happy birthday, Mum!

mum birthday

It’s my mother’s birthday today! I wish I could be there in person to give her flowers, but I thought that painting some might be the next best thing 🙂

Today’s Art: Stromae’s TA FÊTE

I’ve been really enjoying Belgian hip-hop artist Stromae recently. He’s about to start his first American tour, and I’m interested to see how his blend of melancholy and incredible catchiness fares in the states. The official video for his song Ta FĂȘte just released, and already has three and a half million views. The song is also the anthem for the Belgian World Cup team, and this hilarious video shows the charming Stromae interacting with the team in some unexpected ways.

I’ve been working on this for few days now, and it’s obviously pretty different from my usual style. At the same time I’m a bit worried that none of you guys really listen to Stromae. He definitely hasn’t hit Japan, so I don’t know how popular he is other than his ridiculous views on Youtube (but maybe those are all coming from Europe?) So let me know what you think, ok?stromae 6

Today’s art: Otakon’s Hiroko!

I’m posting every day this week in celebration of my new Facebook Page, Super Happy Awesome! So far there’s been two watercolors (Facebook and the BFG) and a pen drawing (Beethoven’s Favorite Fruit) so I thought I’d mix it up a little bit and post a rare and elusive pencil sketch! Oh, and there was also that little English translation of Kyary Pamyu Pamyu’s new single, Kira Kira Killer, the views for which are slightly bonkers. It’s still not as popular as Yume no Hajima Rin Rin, but it’s definitely way busier than Family Party!

Anyway, today’s sketch is of a character near and dear to my heart, Hiroko-chan! Hiroko is the female mascot for Otakon, and before I came to Japan I was president of the parent corporation, Otakorp Inc. I miss my friends & Ota-family, and hopefully I can see them all soon! Happy memories ❀

Squid Ink risotto…at McDonald’s!?

20140627-224909-82149322.jpgWell, Japan may have been knocked out of the World Cup, but I hope that the flavors that the World Cup brought to Japan aren’t knocked out of people’s hearts and marketer’s minds. Marketing masters here in Japan have used this as a fabulous excuse to really experiment, and everyone has benefited. Well, I have, anyway. I mean, when’s the last time you had risotto at McDonald’s? Squid Ink Risotto at that? And here’s the really crazy thing–it was good.

New Kyary Pamyu Pamyu “Kira Kira Killer” lyrics with English Translation

20140626-181506-65706312.jpgThis is a pretty simple song, and pretty low on actual content. As the third single from the upcoming album, I think that this song is essentially designed to be an earworm. â€œăƒ”ă‚«ăƒ”ă‚«ă”ăă‚“ăŸă˜ă‚“Â / Pikapika Fantajin” is coming out on July 9th, and has already released the moving and meaningful Yume no hajima rin rin as well as the movie tie in Family Party.

Today’s Watercolor: The BFG

bfgIt’s Day 3 of my Week of POST EVERYDAY in celebration of my new Facebook page! Speaking of which, have you liked my new Facebook page yet?

https://www.facebook.com/superhappyawesomeyay

I absolutely loved Roald Dahl books growing up, the BFG in particular. A little while back I stumbled upon the artist Shitty Watercolor, whose work is very heavily influenced by Quentin Blake, the artist who illustrated much of Roald Dahl’s work. This video in particular is a big part of why I started painting, and so practicing with a little classic Quentin Blake felt like a great exercise. His style is very different from my usual controlled habits, so it was fun to experiment with his dynamic, powerful style. I still have a long way to go, but this was fun!

Today’s Art: What’s Beethoven’s Favorite Fruit?

It’s DAY TWO of my week of posting every day in celebration of my new Facebook page.

https://www.facebook.com/superhappyawesomeyay (Have you liked it yet? GO LIKE IT.)

Today’s a little pen and ink based on one of my favorite Oyaji gags. This one is really tough for Japanese people, because in Japanese Beethoven’s fifth goes “Ja-ja-ja-jaaaaaa” instead of “Na-na-na-naaaaa” and it breaks their brains to think of it any other way. Like my Two Tired Bicycle, this is obviously inspired by the amazing Frida Clements. She hasn’t done this joke yet, though, that I know!

Today’s Watercolor: A New Facebook Page!

Hey guys! I made a new Facebook page for this blog. I’m working on leveling up my social media presence, so obviously I need an official Facebook page. GO LIKE IT, PLEASE.

https://www.facebook.com/superhappyawesomeyay

Also, from my experiences running this kind of thing in the past, it makes a big difference if you actually, like, interact with the posts. Liking, commenting, even just opening it in a new tab helps ensure that Facebook’s algorithms don’t decide that you hate me and dump it from your feed.

Also, in celebration of this new thing, I’m planning on posting something EVERY DAY THIS WEEK. Watch out!20140623-224216-81736058.jpg

Blog Recommendation: Postacollect!

If you’ve traveled around Japan, you’ve probably seen a certain style of postcards. The design is always distinctive and very modern, but the contents are usually traditional and very location specific. Well, a friend of mine here in Japan has started a shiny new blog all about these interesting post cards called Postacollect!

Explaining the history and backstory as well as the design, each post is chock full of awesome information. My favorite part is that the card is usually held up against the thing it’s representing so that you can literally compare the two. It’s really neat! So if you love Japan’s obsession with regional things and have a collector’s itch to scratch, this is the blog for you 😀

Here’s an example of some photos from a recent post about Kangiin Shotendo in Saitama:
