The Many Faces of ぐんまちゃん — Tsumagoi

This week’s installment in The Many Faces of Gunma-chan reminds me of a Rorschach test. Though there is an actual interpretation and meaning behind this visual salad of an image, I think that the possibilities are potentially endless!

Personally, it appears to me that Gunma-chan is vomiting his internal organs onto a field of cabbages. Like cows with their many stomachs, ponies apparently have many hearts, and poor Gunma-chan is expelling his all over the unsuspecting foliage. かわいそうね!

Salt Caramel Chip Chop: A Taste Disaster

On my lunch break yesterday I stopped by a convenience store, and a new package of Chip!Chop caught my eye. I’d just posted about the catchy yet creepy commercial, and I figured I might as well try the actual product. Chippu choppu!

Happy Engrish Friday! Awkkkward…

This sign is right near our apartment, and it wasn’t until recently that I realized that Power Ranger looking figures were, in fact, the KKK Rangers.

Obviously it doesn’t mean the same thing here, and might not even mean much if you’re not from below the Mason-Dixon line (a.k.a. “The South”.) But still, it’s a little…awkward.

At least they aren’t wearing all white? And their masks aren’t pointy? Oh, Japan…

What is this I don’t even…Chip!Chop

I could tell you that this is Matsu, one of the members of Super Mega Badboy Boyband EXILE. I could tell you that his hair and costume is referring to Osomatsu-kun, the title character of the iconic, long-running manga turned anime. I could even tell you that Chip!Chop is a product of the Meiji chocolate company, of chip shaped cereal pieces sandwiching a thin layer of chocolate filling.

Game of Thrones — The Japanese Covers

So, if you’re anything like us or our friends, you’ve probably been devouring the Song of  Ice and Fire series recently, or have long since finished them. After Game of Thrones was made into an HBO show earlier this year, it seemed like everyone was reading or had already finished the series!

I have a few (nerdy) coworkers who I think would enjoy the books. The language, however, is pretty high level, with randomly archaic vocabulary, and in some cases it’s just downright weird. I doubt my friends can tell a trencher from an auroch, and a wight might be beyond them.

But have no fear! The books are now available in Japanese (as 七王国の玉座) and better yet, the covers are pretty fabulous. Each book was released in chunks, so there’s lots of different covers for each installment in the series. Three different artists have participated so far, but my favorites are by Ken Sugawara.
